San Pedro de las Dueñas stud farm

The San Pedro de las dueñas stud farm has a thousand hectares of pasture and woodland which provides plenty of freedom for the horses reared on the farm. It also has over 50,000 m² of state of the art equine facilities and infrastructure. This includes stabling for over 100 horses.

Monastery of San Pedro de las Dueñas

The San Pedro de las Dueñas stud farm takes its name from the monastery built there by Benedictine monks in the 18th century. It was restored in 2002 by the current owner and is now the main farm building.

Arena

The other impressive building on site in terms of size is the indoor arena. There are three distinct areas to the 9.500 m² building:

  1. Area one has two indoor warm-up rings and a 3,000 m² main arena complete with cutting edge sound and lighting systems. It also has three video screens and comfortable seating for 200 spectators.

  1. The second area has 30 spacious loose boxes to accommodate our magnificent horses.

  1. The third area is the octagonal tack room where the tack and equipment for dressage and general horse care is kept.

Foaling unit

This building is where pregnancies and births are monitored and also where horse rehabilitation takes place under the watchful eye of our veterinary team.

Facilities include 42 foaling boxes, modern AI laboratory and a fully equipped examination and treatment area for our horses.

Stallion and monitoring centre

This building is divided into two areas: the first has 10 loose boxes for horses under observation and the second has 20 loose boxes for the stallions from the stud being used for breeding.

Feeding system and paddocks

Horses at the stud are kept in different areas depending on their sex and age. The paddocks are divided up by 65 kilometres of treated fencing. This ensures that the correct feeding system and appropriate care is provided for each group of animals. All the outbuildings are linked to the foaling units and monitoring centre by a fenced track which allows animals to be moved easily around the farm.

Foals and mares at the stud are fed in the feeding station using a pioneering automatic feeding system designed by equine specialists in Spain. The system ensures that each individual animal eats the correct amount of food, divided into three daily feeds, ensuring optimum development and dramatically reducing the cases of colic, the leading cause of death in horses.

Each feeding station has a work area with a crush used to facilitate necessary veterinary treatments, grooming and clipping of the horses.

Selected colts are reared in small groups to prevent, as far as possible, any injuries and to safeguard any future involvement in classical dressage. They are fed manually in large troughs ensuring that they receive the correct amount of feed.

Of the four hundred hectares of pasture, almost one hundred are irrigated to produce a large part of the fodder given to the mares in winter and spring. In summer and autumn our mares and their foals graze freely in the pastures.
